An acute water shortage has hit Litein town and its environs after the County Government of Kericho failed to settle an outstanding bill of over Ksh 20 million incurred by pumping the water from Itare water supply.
This has left over 40,000 residents in the verge of contracting water borne diseases since they are forced to draw raw water from nearby streams.
Litein Hospital is one of the most affected facilities with over 100 inpatients going without water. The Hospital’s Managing Director Joshua Tanui said they had appealed to the county government to clear the bills which has paralyzed its operations.
Governor Paul Chepkwony then said the grant will end the frequent water shortages that have been experienced in the county.
Chepkwony said that his government would supply water to the residents, something that is now contrary to the promise.
The residents are now calling on the national government to consider reimbursing money to the Company that supplies water to Litein town and its environs to help smooth running of the services.
