Kadenge WhatsApp fund group nets over Ksh72k in hours

Photo/Stafford Ondego/www.sportpicha.com Former international Sammy Sholei has launched an online funds drive to raise cash for the ailing Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge who is recuperating in a Nairobi hospital.
The initiative powered through the WhatsApp group Joe Kadenge Medical Fund had raised Ksh72,716.81 by the time of going to press hours after it was open to invited members on Wednesday night with a target of Ksh2m.

Sholei who was in the Tusker FC (then Kenya Breweries FC) team that lost the 1994 CAF Cup Winners Cup final to Daring Club Motema Pembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo invited a list of who is who in Kenyan sport and politics to aid the ailing icon with the target for Thursday pegged at Ksh120,000.

“We are asking for your support of ONLY Ksh1, 000.00, it will go a long way. Send your Contributions to Cell Number – 0708 794747 for now, the contribution amount is not limited to Ksh 1,000.00, though,” the group members are requested.
“It is sad that raising funds for a legend like Joe is a struggle, when you call on people that take selfies with him they run away,” Sholei told Citizen Digital.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria was among the parliamentarians who heeded the call and sent KSh10,000 to the effort.
“Karibu (welcome) Sammy. Joe Kadenge is a great friend of mine. I am burying my brother tomorrow but over the weekend I will get to see him. Please add the following people here,” Kuria wrote on the group as he invited fellow MPs to the fundraising effort.
“We will make it through one way or the other. I’m sure many people are still on holiday and I’m working out something that will deliver. Mzee Joe is an icon that deserves a standing monument while he is still alive – we will champion a kitty that will enable us build a foundation,” the former midfielder who was elected the vice-president of Football Kenya Federation in 2011 before being suspended less than a year later added.

Kadenge’s condition is said to be improving and is expected to be released from hospital soon.
“He’s doing very well and he may not be in hospital for so long. The doctor seeing him have consulted and said Mr. Kadenge is doing well and should be discharged soon,” a nurse, Jane Ngure who is looking after the football great said.
His son and another retired footballer Evans Kadenge called on Kenyans to pray for his father who has gone through his latest health scare in months.

“We had lunch and stayed with his friends for about one and a half hours. Suddenly he collapsed and we took him to Mater Hospital that was too high and was released to go home. He spent Christmas eve and Christmas at home before his conditioned worsened a day later and we brought him here,” another of his sons, Wycliffe Kadenge narrated.
