Man shot dead by bandits in Pokot

Bandits Bandits A 45-year-old man was on Sunday shot dead in broad daylight by armed bandits at Kambi Karaya area, Central Pokot Sub-County.
Riamula Kiwaru was grazing his livestock when he was attacked by raiders believed to be from the neighbouring Turkana County.
Area residents responded to his calls for help and fought with the raiders, overpowering them in a shootout. The raiders escaped towards Kainuk trading center.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, Pokot Central Deputy County Commissioner Geoffrey Kithinji confirmed the death and said that area security officials are pursuing the perpetrators.
Masol Ward Representative Ariong’o Lopurna expressed fear that the voter registration exercise that kicks off today (Monday) countrywide and school programmes will be affected due to the insecurity in the area.
“Tomorrow (Monday) we begin voter registration, the problem of theft in Pokot and Turkana will affect the process,” she said.
“Some schools are about to be shut down for example at Kiriamet a school has been shut down due to lack of security,” she added.
Ariong’o urged leaders of the two communities to help in maintaining peaceful co-existence between them, adding that they should encourage their community members to return the goats that were stolen.
This comes days after two children were on Friday night killed by bandits in Amolem are along the border of the two counties.
