Gender-based Violence In Kenya Rising At ‘Alarming Rate’, Report

Gender-based violence in Kenya is increasing at an alarming rate, a report on women’s rights in Africa states.
The African Women’s Decade 2014 Annual Review, prepared by Make Every Woman Count, notes that violence against women is on the rise despite Kenya ratifying international treaties that promote women’s rights.

“The leading causes of gender-based violence include cultural norms where women are viewed as the inferior sex. There is a belief that it is socially acceptable for men to discipline their wives by beating them,” the report reads.

The report recognises the country’s efforts to end the vice by introducing relevant legislation like the Protection Against Domestic Violence Bill which criminalizes domestic violence by both men and women, including sexual harassment and physical abuse.
However, it says the country still faces challenges towards fight against gender violence due to inadequate investigations and poor evidence preservation by police.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is also said to be on the rise in several counties due to the approval by some community
members who feel that it should not be
stopped.
